Description

Build arithmetic fluency – 10 questions at a time.

The Year 1 Daily Arithmetic Starter gives teachers a simple and consistent way to develop arithmetic skills throughout the year.

Pupils complete 10 carefully selected arithmetic questions each day, 4 days a week. Teachers can use them for morning work, math lesson starters, retrieval practice or a quick daily arithmetic activity.

However, this is much more than a collection of arithmetic questions. We have carefully mapped the content to create clear progression across the academic year.

At the beginning of Year 1, pupils practice accessible arithmetic content and key foundational skills. Then, as pupils learn new skills in their math lessons, the Daily Arithmetic Starter gradually introduces them into the questions.

At the same time, previously taught skills continue to appear. As a result, pupils regularly retrieve and practice important arithmetic knowledge throughout the year.

This approach creates a daily routine that grows alongside pupils’ learning. It increases the level of challenge while continuing to strengthen essential arithmetic skills.

What’s included?

  • 10 arithmetic questions per day
  • 4 daily starters per week
  • A full academic year of arithmetic practice
  • Carefully mapped Year 1 progression
  • Regular retrieval of previously taught skills
  • Complete answers for every starter
  • PowerPoint files for classroom display
  • PDF files for easy printing

The four-day structure also gives teachers flexibility. For example, teachers can use the fifth day for a longer arithmetic assessment, consolidation or intervention. Alternatively, they can choose a specific focus based on the needs of their class.

Everything is ready to use, so teachers can quickly make arithmetic practice part of their everyday math routine.
