Description

Build arithmetic fluency – 10 questions at a time.

The Year 4 Daily Arithmetic Starter gives teachers a simple and consistent way to develop arithmetic skills throughout the year.

Pupils complete 10 carefully selected arithmetic questions each day, 4 days a week. Teachers can use them for morning work, maths lesson starters, retrieval practice or a quick daily arithmetic activity.

However, this is much more than a collection of arithmetic questions. We have carefully mapped the content to create clear progression across the academic year.

At the beginning of Year 4, pupils revisit key arithmetic skills from Year 3. This gives them regular practice of the foundational knowledge they need for the year ahead.

Then, as pupils learn new Year 4 skills in their maths lessons, the Daily Arithmetic Starter gradually introduces this content into the questions.

Importantly, earlier skills don’t disappear. Year 3 content continues to appear alongside Year 4 learning. Therefore, pupils regularly retrieve and practise previously taught arithmetic.

As the year progresses, the balance gradually shifts towards Year 4 content. As a result, pupils build fluency with new learning while continuing to strengthen their foundations.

What’s included?

The four-day structure also gives teachers flexibility. For example, teachers can use the fifth day for a longer arithmetic assessment, consolidation or intervention. Alternatively, they can choose a specific focus based on the needs of their class.

Everything is ready to use, so teachers can quickly make arithmetic practice part of their everyday maths routine.
